In the crowded World War II game market, the Brothers in Arms series stands out because of its hybrid gameplay. Like Call of Duty, it's a first-person shooter in which the player controls one soldier fighting alongside several squads. However, unlike CoD, these other soldiers are vital to your success throughout the entire game. Soldiers can die from one or two shots and that goes for you, too. You have to direct units to pin down enemies with suppressing fire and then direct others to flank and take them out.
Hell's Highway really shines in the segments where you're given two or three squads and told to, say, retake a village. Being in the middle of a firefight and dodging bullets while coordinate your troops' movement is a lot of fun and has a level of immersion that an isometric real-time strategy game can't match. I will admit that the constant leapfrogging from cover to cover can get a little repetitive at times. The problem is that the enemies rarely take the fight to you. They'll dig into a spot and stay there, except when they recognize they've been flanked - in which case they'll retreat further back. Even when the Germans are supposedly mounting an offensive, they'll generally end up, again, grabbing cover and sniping at you. There's never an opportunity when they're trying to advance through your lines. The result is that you're free to advance at your own pace and pick off the Nazis one at a time.
